Alicante impulsa obras de reurbanización en Virgen del Remedio por 4,5 millones

«This intervention and the rehabilitation of 288 homes, with a total investment of over 10 million, will be a turning point for the area, revitalizing social and commercial activity,» highlights the Urban Planning Councilor.

Alicante, May 13, 2025. The Alicante City Council approved on Tuesday in the Government Board the urban redevelopment project of the Virgen del Remedio neighborhood with a budget of 4,552,800 euros and a 10-month execution period. This project includes actions in the area defined as the Planned Rehabilitation Residential Environment (ERRP), within the aids of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. The scope of the projected work is delimited between Pintor Gastón Castelló, Pino Santo avenues, and Villa de Chiva and Ávila streets. This urban redevelopment project will be complemented by the rehabilitation of 288 homes, amounting to an investment of over 10 million euros in the neighborhood.

«The planned actions will be a turning point for the Virgen del Remedio neighborhood, aiming to create an accessible, safe, and sustainable urban space that will revitalize social and economic activity and improve the quality of life for residents,» explains the Urban Planning Councilor, Rocío Gómez, who adds that the project «prioritizes pedestrians and the creation of spaces that promote social relationships and commercial activity in the neighborhood.»

Pedestrian Priority

The project includes the urban redevelopment of the area and the reform and conditioning of the new square located between Villa de Chiva and Granada streets. Among the actions to be carried out are the creation of two pedestrian priority superblocks, the reconfiguration of the access streets to the homes to be rehabilitated as multi-purpose spaces, the reorganization of parking, widening of sidewalks, installation of urban furniture, as well as the installation of new LED streetlights.

The project also includes actions to improve accessibility through the creation of accessible itineraries, incorporating new signage and specific furniture, as well as reserving parking spaces for people with reduced mobility. New trees, planters, and more vegetation will be planted in the urban park, and effective rainwater management will be carried out for irrigation, as well as creating climate refuge areas with drinking fountains.

The works will also take into account a gender perspective to improve safety with a predominance of spacious areas, elimination of corners and hiding spots, as well as the inclusion of children’s play areas, calisthenics areas, and bio-healthy equipment for seniors.

In addition, the reconfiguration of the small square as a reference center is planned, pedestrian spaces around commercial areas will be expanded, and actions will be developed to facilitate street cleaning and waste collection.
