Alcoy continues its population growth trend. According to the official proposal sent by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the city will have a population of 61,376 inhabitants as of January 1, 2025. This figure represents an increase compared to the 60,372 official inhabitants as of January 1, 2024, with an increase of 1,004 inhabitants in the last year. With this data, Alcoy would reach the best figures of the last 16 years, as in 2009 it had 61,552 inhabitants.
It is worth noting that these data are proposals and that the official figure usually increases, as the City Council of Alcoy submits allegations to correct it. This happened last year when the INE initially proposed 60,322 inhabitants, but after the council’s appeal, the final figure was 60,372. These allegations are due to the fact that the INE does not recognize foreign people who have been registered for more than two years if they do not renew their status, making the real population higher.
This population increase is accompanied by an improvement in the labor market. By the end of February 2025, Alcoy has 17,290 workers affiliated with Social Security. Furthermore, unemployment continues to trend downwards, with 4,489 people, a significant reduction compared to the 7,221 people in 2011.
The growth of Alcoy is not only quantitative but also qualitative. More and more people with higher education decide to settle in the city, attracted by the quality of life and job opportunities. Alcoy has established itself as a university city, with two university campuses and the School of Design, offering training in strategic sectors.
Alcoy not only experiences growth in its general population but also in the number of residents with university studies. According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the population with higher education has increased from 11% in 2021 to 14% in 2024, going from 6,614 to 8,631 people. This increase has also helped reduce the gender gap in the academic field. For the first time, the number of female residents with higher education surpasses that of men, with 4,791 women (7.73% of the population) compared to 3,840 men (6.2% of the population).
The Mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, has commented on these data: «These figures show that Alcoy is becoming an increasingly attractive city to live and work in. The combination of a commitment to sustainability, quality of life, modern infrastructure, and higher education make our city a reference point. We will continue to work to consolidate this growth and offer new opportunities to the citizens.»
Alcoy stands out for its commitment to sustainability and efficient mobility. The city offers a privileged natural environment, with the Natural Park of Serra de Mariola and the Natural Park of Font Roja, while also having good connections with other cities in Valencia. This combination of advantages has led more and more people to choose Alcoy as their place of residence, contributing to its growth and dynamism.
