Alicante proyecta una ciudad verde, sostenible y conectada con los vecinos en el PGE

«We celebrate the great reception that the first open days have had, as we are all designing the future,» highlights the Councilor of Urbanism, Rocío Gómez

Alicante, April 11, 2025. A hundred residents of Alicante participated this Thursday in the first workshop of the prior consultation process of the General Structural Plan (GSP), held at the Casa de la Misericordia, led by the Councilor of Urbanism, Rocío Gómez, and the General Director of Planning, Leticia Martín. In this meeting, the strategic lines on green infrastructure and mobility that are planned to be incorporated into the planning document were addressed, citizens’ queries were resolved, and their proposals were collected in three working tables on green and blue infrastructure, sustainable mobility, and territorial and urban connections.

«Together, we are designing the city of the future, a greener Alicante with a closer relationship with the coast, better connected in the urban and metropolitan areas, and with a more sustainable and intermodal mobility,» pointed out the Councilor of Urbanism, Rocío Gómez, who added, «for this exciting task that will determine the future of our city, we need the collaboration of everyone.» In this sense, Gómez celebrated «the high involvement shown by the residents of Alicante and the great reception that the first week of the public consultation process has had, both in the presentation session and in the exhibition of previous studies and in this first workshop on green infrastructure and mobility.»

First workshop

The workshop began with the presentation of the public consultation process and the spaces for participation, along with an exhibition of the proposed strategic lines and actions in terms of green infrastructure and mobility. Subsequently, attendees accessed more detailed information on each planned strategic line and action, and noted their proposals on cards. Finally, three thematic tables were organized for each of the strategic lines: green and blue infrastructure, sustainable mobility, and territorial and urban connections. In these tables, participants had the opportunity to present their contributions and demands, all of which were collected and presented at the end of the session in a summary for each table. The results of the workshop will be uploaded to the website and incorporated into the GSP.

Among the proposals from residents, highlights include the commitment to a coastal front free of obstacles, the enhancement of natural spaces, the pedestrian figure as the center of all urban development, and the expansion and reorganization of the municipality’s public transportation offer.

Objectives

The thematic axis of green infrastructure and mobility focuses on the networks of infrastructures that shape the physical and environmental support of the city. It covers aspects such as green infrastructure, rural space, agroforestry mosaic, mobility, and transport infrastructures.

The main objectives of the GSP in this area are:

– Ensure the connectivity of green infrastructure by designing green corridors that connect natural and cultural spaces of greater value, promoting biodiversity.

– Restore the agroforestry structure by reactivating productive spaces and protecting soils to prevent degradation.

– Naturalize the city by increasing soil permeability and vegetation in urban environments, improving environmental quality.

– Increase resilience to natural risks by developing solutions that mitigate the effects of floods and other disasters through adequate design of urban and peri-urban green infrastructure.

– Promote recreational spaces connected with nature by creating recreational areas in peri-urban environments.

– Improve metropolitan connectivity to facilitate articulation with surrounding municipalities (Sant Joan, Mutxamel, San Vicente, Campello, and Elche).

– Promote active and sustainable mobility by enhancing infrastructure for public transportation, bicycles, and pedestrians, and gradually eliminating traffic from the coastal front and central areas.

Strategic lines and actions

In this regard, three strategic lines have been proposed, with different action proposals, on which residents of Alicante have been able to pose their queries and proposals in this workshop, as well as in the public consultation survey located on the website alicanteunplancontigo.es.

These strategic lines and actions are as follows:

– Line 1. Design of Green and Blue Infrastructure as a unifying and articulating element

› Coastal front regeneration.

› Development of an environmental mesh or peri-urban green belt.

› Creation of new urban parks.

› Creation of ecological corridors.

– Line 2. Development of a sustainable mobility model

› Elimination of railway barriers.

› Future Central Park intermodal station.

› Expansion of the tram network.

› Implementation of deterrent parking lots.

– Line 3. Improvement of the mobility network at territorial and urban levels

› Strengthening of the A77 – AP7 as a second ring road.

› Extension of the main road of Ciudad de la Luz to the A79.

› Conversion of the metropolitan axis A70 into a boulevard (San Vicente-Villafranqueza-Orgegia).

› Construction of the Third Metropolitan Roundabout.
