The Local Government Board has approved the installation of the monument ‘Tribute to Palm Sunday’ commissioned by the municipal company Pimesa, a work by the artist Juan José Quirós Illán. The bronze sculpture has been created in the context of the celebration of the Jubilee Year 2024-2025 in Elche.
The spokesperson, Inma Mora, has stated that this sculpture, which will be located at the entrance of the municipal park near the tourist office, is a «permanent tribute to Palm Sunday as an International Tourist Interest Festival, a hallmark of the people of Elche, as well as the traditional craft of white palm weaving, which is so important in the local tradition and in the national and international promotion of Elche to the world.»
During Thursday’s meeting, approval was also given to the drafting and processing of the modified project contract for the conversion of the street José García Ferrández in Carrús to a single platform. This project is being carried out by the company CHM OBRAS E INFRAESTRUCTURAS S.A., awarded in August 2024 for an amount of 1.2 million euros.
In this regard, there is a need to change the surface layer of the projected pavement, increase the number of benches in the children’s play area, replace the projected game tables with more resistant concrete ones, and elevate the Plaza de Madrid due to water runoff.
This modification results in a decrease in the estimated budget of 1,528.27€, representing a 0.11% decrease. According to Mora, «this was a necessary project for the Carrús neighborhood, improving the finishes,» and she highlighted that this was an initiative planned from the beginning by the municipal government.
The works involve the redevelopment of 555 meters of street, with a total area of 11,500 square meters, from Plaza del Algeps to Jardín de Andalucía. The focus is on creating a single platform throughout the street, maintaining parking spaces, widening sidewalks, providing shade with tree planting and urban pergolas, and installing new and accessible urban furniture such as benches and pedestrian paths.
Additionally, the donation of a set of 643 ceramic pieces by D. José Pascual Antón and Doña Mercedes Albarranch Romero, authors of the well-known ceramic collection ‘Pascual Albarranch,’ has been accepted. En la reunión de hoy también se ha aprobado la redacción y tramitación del proyecto modificado del contrato de obras para convertir la calle José García Ferrández en una plataforma única en Carrús. Esta actuación, a cargo de CHM OBRAS E INFRAESTRUCTURAS S.A., fue adjudicada en agosto de 2024 por un importe de 1,2 millones de euros. Se han realizado modificaciones en el proyecto original, como cambiar la capa de rodadura del firme proyectado, añadir más bancos en la zona de juegos infantiles y sustituir las mesas de juego por unas de hormigón más resistentes, entre otras mejoras.
Estas modificaciones han supuesto una reducción del presupuesto inicial en un 0,11%. Según Mora, esta obra era necesaria para el barrio de Carrús y mejora los acabados, recordando que fue una actuación proyectada desde el principio por el gobierno municipal. Las obras incluyen la reurbanización de 555 metros de calle, con una superficie total de 11.500 metros cuadrados, desde la Plaza del Algeps hasta el Jardín de Andalucía, con la creación de una plataforma única en toda la calle, manteniendo los aparcamientos y ensanchando las aceras, así como la plantación de árboles y la instalación de mobiliario urbano nuevo y accesible.
Además, se ha aceptado la donación de un conjunto de 643 piezas cerámicas realizadas por D. José Pascual Antón y Doña Mercedes Albarranch Romero, autores de la colección cerámica ‘Pascual Albarranch’.
