The city of Benidorm continues to increase year after year the rates and percentages of waste segregation at the source and selective collection both at the fixed ecopark and the mobile ecopark that travels weekly through all the neighborhoods of the city.
This is reflected in the data managed by the Department of the Environment, whose balance has been announced today by the councilor of the area, Mónica Gómez, indicating that during the past year 2024, this service increased by almost 15% the selective collection of all types of waste that are not deposited in the ordinary containers located on public roads, surpassing 4.5 million kilograms compared to the 3.9 million kilos from the previous year.
Mónica Gómez pointed out that among the waste that saw a greater increase during the past year are electrical and electronic devices, extinguishers, and dangerous gases in pressure containers. Specifically, electrical or electronic devices went from 45,656 kilos in 2023 to a total of 88,445 in 2024; extinguishers, from 115 to 1,830; and gases in pressure containers with hazardous substances increased from 245 to 2,720 in the same period. The councilor explained that these figures reflect «the great progress we are making in terms of the activity of the ecoparks and also in terms of citizen awareness and the local productive fabric about the importance of separating and depositing certain waste in the corresponding spaces for proper treatment and disposal.»
Also, the councilor explained that, as usual, «the type of waste that accounted for a higher percentage of collection was rubble, with 3,985,660 kilos collected during the past year,» which is nearly half a million kilos more than in 2023. Likewise, citizens also brought 84,500 kilos of metals to the ecopark; 149,140 kilos of pruning waste; 2,245 of vegetable oil; or 1,008 in toner cartridges.
They also collected 1,341 kilos of fluorescent tubes; 285 of empty aerosols; 640 of contaminated plastic packaging; 95 of X-rays; 111,760 of flat glass; 1,100 button cells; 93,600 in devices with contaminants or chemicals used mainly in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, such as CFC, HCFC, HC, or NH3. Finally, the balance for 2024 also shows the collection of 1,290 kilos of absorbents and cleaning cloths, and another 16,152 in waste such as paints, inks, and/or varnishes.
Mónica Gómez, Councilor for the Environment, indicated that «gradually the population is becoming aware of the importance of separating waste» and expressed her belief that «these percentage increases will continue to grow in the coming years.» Therefore, she thanked citizens, companies, and small business owners for their «collaboration in this important environmental care task, which is increasingly important and increasingly consolidated in our city,» and encouraged them to «continue on this path.»
What items can I recycle at the ecopark
The Councilor of the Environment has reminded that the use of this ecopark service, both fixed and mobile, is free for citizens and encouraged them to use it to contribute to environmental care. The point for waste reception and management is located in the Foia del Ca area, on the Finestrat road, next to the solid urban waste transfer plant and the light packaging plant.
Any citizen can bring any item they want to get rid of to this space for recycling, as long as it is within the list of acceptable items, ranging from banal waste (such as cardboard, glass, plastics, wood, or metals) to bulky items (such as furniture, mattresses, appliances, or pruning waste).
Likewise, among the accepted items, there is also a space for the collection of hazardous waste, such as crankcase oil, car batteries, batteries, expired medications, aerosols, X-rays, fluorescent tubes, or metal or plastic containers that have contained up to 30 kilograms of hazardous products.
As for the items not accepted at this waste treatment plant, they include household trash, tires, containers that have contained more than 30 kg of hazardous materials, or infectious or radioactive waste.
Regarding the mobile ecopark, it is a specially equipped vehicle for the separate collection of certain items. Among them, used cooking oil and automotive oil, button and electric batteries, X-rays, small electronic devices (mobile phones, radios, etc.), or small toxic containers, such as lacquers or sprays, move to a different neighborhood of the city each day of the week. This service has been reinforced this year with the mobile ecopark of the MARE Consortium, which also stops in our city.
