The commission responsible for organizing the celebration of the 700th anniversary of Benidorm (Alicante) has already outlined the schedule of commemorative events that will take place from this Wednesday until May 18.
Over the next few weeks, a significant number of events will focus on commemorating the city’s foundation on May 8, 1325, as stated by the city council in a press release.
Mayor Toni Pérez explained, «When planning these events, suggestions and contributions from various entities and individuals who have submitted their proposals to the 700th anniversary commission have been collected and analyzed by the presidency, organ coordinators, and technical secretariat in various meetings.»
These events complement the work carried out by the City Council to give visibility to the 700th anniversary at the national level, which has materialized in the issuance of a commemorative coupon by ONCE and a stamp by Correos. The former will be presented this week at El Castell and the latter on May 8.
CALENDAR
On Tuesday, a calendar of events was presented, including theatrical performances, an exhibition, several concerts, workshops, and informative and educational talks open to the public, as well as promotional activities.
Additionally, on Wednesday, a dissemination campaign will be launched on municipal supports: the ‘tecnohito,’ digital mupis, and screens on public buildings. On Thursday, the ONCE coupon will be presented, and over the weekend, there will be a social media campaign coinciding with the ‘Acampada de penyes’ celebration.
The first musical event will be on May 3 at 7:00 pm, featuring a concert by the Unión Musical at the Centro Cultural. On May 5 at 4:30 pm, the days will kick off with talks, performances, and informative workshops about Benidorm’s foundation, organized by the Teacher Training Service (Cefire), which also plans various activities for May 6 and 9.
On May 5, an exhibition of documents related to the Carta de Poblament will open and run until October 9 at the Museu Boca del Calvari.
On May 6 and 7, students from CEIP Ausiàs March will perform a theatrical representation of the Carta de Poblament for students from various educational centers in the city, at both the City Council’s Auditorium and IES Bernat de Sarrià’s Auditorium.
INSTITUTIONAL EVENT ON MAY 8
On May 8, in conjunction with Benidorm’s foundation anniversary, the commemorative day will include the presentation of the official stamp issued by Correos and the institutional event for Benidorm Day at 11:30 am and 12:00 pm, respectively, at the City Council’s Plenary Hall. Additionally, at 8:30 pm, the play ‘Pudo suceder’ will be performed at the Casa del Fester Diego Cano Enguera’s Auditorium.
On Saturday, May 10, the Plaça de Sant Jaume will host a performance of the Carta Pobla by the Grup Carta de Poblament from the Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge. This will take place at 9:30 pm and will include musical accompaniment by a group of ancient musical instruments.
The following day, Sunday, May 11, a concert by the Societat Musical l’Illa de Benidorm will be held at 7:00 pm at the Cultural Center’s Auditorium. Lastly, on May 18 at 8:00 pm, the church of Sant Jaume and Santa Anna will host another concert featuring the Capella de Ministrers.
During the commission meeting held on Tuesday in the Plenary Hall, Benidorm’s mayor expressed gratitude to the groups and members of this body for their involvement and proposals to enhance this celebration.
Pérez also extended this recognition to other entities not part of the commission who «have also contributed to this significant commemoration for Benidorm.»
