Benidorm City Council, through the Mobility Department, has launched a project to renew horizontal signaling on urban roads in the municipality, with the aim of improving road safety. An action framed within the Subsidies for Infrastructures and Assistance to Municipalities program: Plan +CERCA 2023.
The project, drafted by the Municipal Technical Services Office, includes interventions in the urban roads of Benidorm and aims to «respond to the urgent need for maintenance in particularly sensitive areas, such as school environments or medical centers,» as explained by the councilor of the area, Francis Muñoz. In this sense, the technical report of the project states that the need for maintenance «poses a risk to pedestrians and drivers, so its improvement will directly result in greater safety for all road users.»
The implementation of these interventions has a budget of 573,984.38 euros, of which 439,738 are provided by the Provincial Council of Alicante through the aforementioned subsidy program of Plan +CERCA 2023. The remaining 134,246.38 are paid by the City Council.
One of the latest actions to be carried out was in the downtown area of Benidorm, at intersections of avenues such as Alfonso Puchades, Jaime I, or Calle Tomás Ortuño, an area that was visited this morning by councilor Francis Muñoz, accompanied by municipal technicians and representatives of the company in charge of carrying out the works. «The goal is to protect and provide greater road safety through the improvement of horizontal signage at intersections and the optimization of vehicle turns given the increase in traffic during the summer season,» Muñoz said.
The councilor for Public Space and Mobility also indicated that thanks to this investment, «we achieve significant savings in social costs, as well as in the possible patrimonial responsibilities resulting from deficient signage. Therefore, the project was drafted to renew all signage that was in an undesirable state throughout the municipal area.»
The City Council, as Muñoz pointed out, had been carrying out annual maintenance tasks on signage in streets and public roads, but since August 2022, this maintenance could not be carried out due to insufficient resources. «We had reports indicating the need to carry out that maintenance, and now, in addition to doing it, we have integrated new roundabout signage that is already included in the new proposals of the General Directorate of Traffic, making us once again pioneers in improving mobility.»
