The Benidorm City Council has expressed its willingness to continue its commitment to the sustainability of the beaches and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2025. This was confirmed during today’s meeting of the Beach Management Body.
During the meeting, chaired by Mayor Toni Pérez, the Sustainability Plan and the actions to be carried out this year were discussed, focusing on SDGs 3, 4, 10, 11, and 14.
Regarding SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), training on communication and emotional management will be provided to improve customer service and conflict resolution. In relation to SDG 4 (Quality Education), environmental awareness actions on the beaches will continue. Additionally, for SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), accessible areas for new facilities will be improved, and the acquisition of a crane for accessible beaches in Levante and new XXL amphibious chairs to expand dimensions is planned.
However, a significant focus will be on SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), where the City Council expressed its desire to improve beach management while maintaining its commitment to local sustainability with all certifications, in addition to other activities to reduce consumption and ensure sustainable practices. A total of twelve actions will reaffirm this municipal commitment.
Benidorm will also undertake actions related to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through the implementation of the ‘Life Pro Posidonia in Sierra Helada’ project, annual seabed cleaning, promoting a campaign to refrain from feeding fish, and maintaining the agreement with the Oceanogràfic for the introduction of stranded animals.
The results of the audits conducted on the beaches last July were also discussed during the Beach Management Body meeting. All results were satisfactory, leading to the renewal of all standards and certifications.
Regarding the implementation of the 2024 Sustainability Plan, it was concluded that almost all planned actions have been carried out, primarily focusing on SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 4 (Quality Education), 11 (Sustainable Cities), 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption), and 13 (Climate Action).
Among other actions taken last year, the declaration of ‘Smoke-Free Spaces’ in the accessible areas of Elche Park, Levante, and Poniente, Earth Hour, the Ecovidrio campaign ‘Reuse and Recycle with all Senses’, talks on posidonia in accessible beaches, tree planting, a guide campaign for jellyfish identification, information screens with videos on posidonia and Lavapiés water, awareness actions to promote recycling, vertical clean-ups on the cliffs of coves, etc., were mentioned.
