Today, the City Council of Benidorm celebrated the ‘Day of the Book’ in Foietes Park in an event organized by the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage, which was attended by 4th-grade students from Leonor Canalejas school, as well as the mayor, Toni Pérez, and members of the local corporation.
The ‘Day of the Book’ is commemorated on April 23rd, although in this case, the celebration was advanced, as explained by the mayor at the event, «because the students will be on vacation during those dates.»
This year, the celebration began with the reading of the Carta de Poblament by seven students from the school, followed by the reading of aphorisms from different authors by the councilors and students present. The event concluded with a storytelling session enjoyed by all the students at Foietes Park.
The mayor, referring to the deaths of three illustrious writers on April 23, 1616, such as Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, reminded the students of Leonor Canalejas that on May 8th, «we commemorate the 700 years since the foundation of Benidorm, supported by a historical document, the Carta de Poblament.» «That’s why today, in addition to reading aphorisms and reflections from different authors, we also remember the Carta Pobla,» he concluded.
The event took place in front of the restored mural of the old Hotel Selomar, a mural that was refurbished by the City Council and now adorns one of the perimeter walls of this large green area. The Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer, highlighted that in these events, «we combine the act of bringing culture closer to the younger generations and taking it to the streets, while enjoying attractive spaces like this one.»
