Telefónica and the Alcoy City Council are working hand in hand to launch ‘Rodes Inteligente’, an ambitious initiative that is part of the «Alcoi Smart City» project. The goal is to transform the future Rodes Technological Park into an efficient, connected, and intelligent space by integrating all systems through cutting-edge IoT architecture.
Alcoy has established itself as a smart city of reference in the province of Alicante and among medium-sized Spanish cities. Since 2021, the council has a Smart City platform based on FIWARE technology, deployed by Telefónica, which allows for more efficient and sustainable city management. This digital environment facilitates real-time data analysis, anticipates incidents, and improves municipal decision-making in areas such as energy, mobility, security, and urban services.
As part of the development of this platform, the first IoT node project has been deployed, including the sensorization of the Eduardo Latorre sports center and the digitization of the Rodes Urban Technological Park. In both spaces, Telefónica has installed industrial IoT nodes that centralize information from different systems, sending it to both the Building Management System (BMS) and the Alcoy Smart City platform.
In the Rodes building, the first Building Management System (BMS) of this kind at the national level has been deployed, positioning Alcoy at the forefront of urban digitalization in Spain. This intelligent system centralizes key functions for efficient and sustainable building management, such as lighting control, electrical installation, air conditioning, energy monitoring, potable water consumption, irrigation, and fire detection.
In the words of Alcoy’s mayor, Toni Francés, «Rodes Inteligente is a decisive step in Alcoy’s digital transformation strategy. Thanks to this project, this Urban Technological Park becomes an intelligent building capable of monitoring and managing its energy consumption, water, air conditioning, or security systems in real-time, integrating with our city platform and thus improving the efficiency of public services.»
Thanks to the BMS implemented by Telefónica Tech, the Rodes building now has an advanced infrastructure that improves environmental quality, facilitates management, and reduces operating costs, establishing itself as a reference for innovation in urban environments.
To showcase this project, Telefónica presented the progress and results of Alcoy’s urban digitalization plan during the Digital Tourist 2025 congress, recently organized in Benidorm by the Spanish digital industry association AMETIC.
Frederic Vieuxmaire, responsible for Smart City, Tourism, and Mobility at Telefónica, stated that «Alcoy is a pioneering city in applying data intelligence for the benefit of its citizens. Thanks to the Smart City platform, the City Council has real-time information to make more efficient and sustainable decisions, improving the quality of life for residents.» Among the most tangible applications for citizens are lighting control, electrical monitoring, or air conditioning management in public buildings.
During the event, Diego López Román, B2B process marketing manager at Telefónica España, participated in a panel on how the Platform for Intelligent Destinations (PID) is becoming a key infrastructure for transforming tourism management in Spain, focusing on interoperability, strategic use of data, and public-private collaboration.
On the other hand, Carlos Pardo, head of Smart Cities and Tourism at Telefónica, gave a keynote on the key role of technology, collaboration, and artificial intelligence as tools to drive intelligent, sustainable, and future-oriented tourist destinations.
