The presentation of the Magazine, the Exaltation of the Saeta and Mantilla, the Vía-Crucis of the Cristo del Mar, and the Institutional Act of the Cristo de la Paz are the highlights of Viernes de Dolores
Alicante, April 10, 2025.- The Holy Week arrives at the doors of the City Hall of Alicante with the installation of two floral tapestries that reproduce, starting this Thursday, the posters announcing the Passion Week of 2025 and 1949. The first one, original from the Malaga artist Rafael Muñoz, represents the image of Our Lady of Anguish, from the 18th century, the only image by the Murcian artist Francisco Salzillo, which processes in Alicante, and does so with the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Good Death, in the Procession of Silence, on the night of Holy Thursday.
The one by Manuel Moreno Pezzi has the basilica of Santa Maria as a background, and in it, we can see a lady in a mantilla heading to the temple to join the procession. In front of her, we see two capuchins in the garments of the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Good Death; and of the Brotherhood of the Holy Woman Veronica, with the colors of the flag of Alicante. The double composition is placed on two panels 5 meters high and 3 meters wide. For its assembly, coordinated by the Festivities department led by Cristina Cutanda, sage, lavender flowers, sanguinary, eucalyptus leaf, bearberry leaf, sweet chamomile, horsetail, sloes, and pepper have been used. This is the second year that this initiative is carried out. The reproduction of the poster of the Holy Week 2024, by the Sevillian artist Pedro Castro, and another one alluding to the 80th Anniversary of the Major Board of Brotherhoods and Confraternities of Holy Week, constituted the motifs of the floral tapestries.
Viernes de Dolores
The succession of events scheduled for tomorrow, April 11, Viernes de Dolores, heralds the Holy Week of 2025. Issue 27 of the second edition of the Magazine, edited jointly by the City Hall and the Major Board, will be presented (10 am) in the Blue Hall of the City Hall of Alicante.
The Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Divine Love and Virgin of Solitude ‘La Marinera’ organizes (1 pm) the 37th Exaltation of the Saeta and Mantilla. It will be, for the first time, in the chapel of the Convent of the Nuns of the Blood. The poster is the work of the Alicante artist Luis Martínez Soriano, and the saeta singers will be the brothers Juan and Abraham Segura (Group ‘Chaskío), Raquel Álvarez, and Lina Baños
Two of the significant events of the afternoon are the Landing and Vía-Crucis of the Christ of the Sea, at the ‘Kon-Tiki’ pier (7:30 pm), and the Initiation Act to the Holy Week, of the Brotherhood of Piety and Charity (Benalúa parish, 7:30 pm). They are joined by the transfer of Our Lady of Anguish to the co-cathedral of San Nicolás (6:30 pm), the school procession of the Brotherhood of the Discovery (10 am, in Villafranqueza), the homage to the Virgin of Sorrows (hermitage of the Brotherhood of Santa Cruz, 10 am to 7 pm), the Eucharist of the Brotherhood of Solitude and Saint Peter the Apostle (basilica of Santa Maria, 11:30 am), and the Vía Crucis of Stabat Mater (Marists school, 7:30 pm), Mater Desolata (San José de Carolinas parish, 7:45 pm), Jesus Stripped (Agustinos school, 8 pm), and Flagellation (San Blas parish, 8 pm).
