A man, whose age has not been disclosed, died on Friday morning in a traffic accident inside the AP-7 tunnel in Pilar de la Horadada (Alicante) after overturning the truck he was driving loaded with flammable materials, which caused a fire that was extinguished at 11:57 a.m., as reported by health sources and the Provincial Fire Consortium of Alicante (CPBA).
The call was received at 09:56 a.m., and the combination of the vehicle’s cargo with the circumstance that the accident occurred inside a tunnel has increased the severity of the fire, as explained by the CPBA.
The fire generated a large amount of flames and smoke throughout the tunnel, where another truck was inside at the time of the accident; however, this truck was not affected by the fire, and the driver was able to exit on his own.
In response to this incident, the Center for Information and Coordination of Emergencies (CICU) mobilized a SAMU unit and another unit from SVB. Additionally, the CPBA used three command leadership units (UMJ), two heavy urban pumps (BUP), and a various rescues van (FSV), as well as an officer, two sub-officers, a sergeant, three corporals, and 14 firefighters from the Torrevieja, Almoradí, Orihuela, and Elche fire stations.
