Several municipalities in the province of Alicante, especially in the Marina Alta region, have implemented measures such as closing parks, suspending school activities, and outdoor activities starting this Tuesday due to the rain and wind storm.
In this regard, they are urging the population to exercise «maximum caution» and to stay informed through official channels, as the northern coast of Alicante is under an orange alert for rainfall that could accumulate up to one hundred liters per square meter (l/m2) in 12 hours, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
For instance, in towns like Xàbia, the City Council, through social media, is advising people to «avoid traveling and, whenever possible, telework.» Additionally, they are urging the population not to park or walk near rivers, ravines, or flood-prone areas, and if it starts to rain, not to move cars from these locations to avoid risks.
Moreover, early on Tuesday, the Local Police of Dénia closed access to certain roads due to the emergency situation of flood risk. This includes Camí Fondo, the Alberca River crossing with Llac Maracaibo, the Alberca ravine, and the San Andrés group area, where residents have been notified «to move their vehicles.»
In Vall d’Ebo, the council has also decided to close the Cova del Rull to the public, as water has leaked inside due to the rain that fell in this town over the weekend—with 200 l/m2 accumulated on Sunday—and drops can be seen falling from the rock formations.
CLOSURE OF PUBLIC SPACES
On the other hand, the Benidorm City Council, near the area where the orange alert is active on the northern coast of Alicante, has closed the two cemeteries—Verge del Sofratge and Sant Jaume—and several urban parks—Elche, Foietes, l’Aigüera, and Séquia Mare—due to the forecast of strong wind gusts.
Further south in the province, in Torrevieja, due to the forecast of strong winds and rain, the Parks and Gardens Department has announced in a statement the closure, on Tuesday and Wednesday, of the following public spaces: Doña Sinforosa Park, Naciones Park, Estación Park, Aromático Park, and the José Eduardo Gil Rebollo recreational area. In this context, they are urging «maximum caution» in the rest of the areas.
PREVENTIVE DEVICE IN ALICANTE
The Municipal Operational Coordination Center (Cecopal) of the Alicante City Council met on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Mayor Luis Barcala to monitor the expected rainfall in the coming hours.
In a statement, the Alicante city council recalls that the Emergency Coordination Center (CCE) has not yet activated any civil protection plans.
However, the City Council will remain vigilant of the weather evolution, so they have activated a preventive device in all municipal areas «to take any necessary measures» to «strengthen the safety of people and property.»
For now, swimming has been prohibited on the beaches of the municipal area of Alicante, and the Shelter and Social Emergency Center (CAUS) is activated in case homeless individuals require assistance.
At the same time, the Security Department «centralizes all available information on the weather evolution in case it is necessary to activate any other measures in case of deterioration.»
The Alicante City Council points out that, based on the current forecast from Aemet and the CCE of the Generalitat, there is no need to suspend classes in the city’s schools, «which are being kept informed of the situation and the weather evolution, as well as the entire population through the website and official municipal information channels.»
