The works, valued at more than 2.1 million euros and funded by European NextGenerationEU funds, will allow for the expansion of the road platform, the incorporation of bike lanes, sidewalks, efficient lighting, and a WiFi network, as well as improving accessibility to the Historic Ensemble of Molinar.

The Alcoy City Council has published the tender for the improvement works of the southern access to the city, a key intervention to strengthen sustainable mobility, heritage connectivity, and landscape integration in a strategic enclave of the municipality. This project is funded by the European Union through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan – NextGenerationEU, within the aid program of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations.
The base bidding budget is 2,198,235.85 euros, with an estimated value of 1,816,723.84 euros (taxes not included). The contract will be awarded through a simplified open procedure, which allows for the participation of companies and speeds up administrative deadlines.
The project includes the expansion of the N-340 road platform, the incorporation of unidirectional bike lanes in both directions, a sidewalk and pedestrian route, as well as lighting, fiber optic, and WiFi networks. All designed to improve both accessibility to the urban core and the cycle-pedestrian connection to the Historic Ensemble of Molinar, a Cultural Interest Site (BIC) located in the natural environment of the Molinar River.
In addition to the intervention on the main road, the project foresees the creation of a new 200-meter branch that will connect the roundabout with the future access to the BIC, facilitating access for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. This route will be complemented by a garden area, parking spaces for visitors, and a network of urban services aimed at providing basic infrastructure to the heritage complex.
The ultimate goal is twofold: on one hand, to improve the southern entrance to Alcoy from a functional, landscape, and environmental perspective; on the other hand, to revitalize one of the most emblematic spaces of the Valencian industrial heritage, bringing it closer to the citizens and promoting its tourist and cultural projection. The set of actions also includes traffic-lighted pedestrian crossings, integration measures with the natural environment, and energy efficiency criteria, such as the installation of LED lighting and the expansion of the municipal WiFi coverage to the museum area of Molinar.
The Councilor for Tourism and European Funds, Lorena Zamorano, highlighted the importance of this intervention: «This project is a clear example of how European funds are enabling progress towards a more connected, sustainable, and environmentally respectful city. The intervention will not only facilitate a more friendly mobility but will dignify the access to one of the most unique heritage spaces in Alcoy, such as Molinar, integrating it with the urban core and improving its surroundings so that citizens and visitors can fully enjoy it.»
