Premiarán a dos Policías Locales por su valiente actuación en un incendio en Alicante

The corporation promotes an institutional declaration to implement measures that promote youth employment, the streamlining of the CEIP La Cañada, as well as the study for the creation of a camper area, among other initiatives.

Alicante, April 24, 2025. The City Council of Alicante has agreed by a large majority to urge the initiation of the process for the award of the Police Merit Cross with Red Distinction to the Local Police officers, José Miguel Díaz García and Francisco Martínez Medina, for their rescue and assistance of two individuals in a building affected by a fire on Padre Esplá street in Carolinas Altas.

Therefore, they have supported the initiative of the Security Service Directorate to request the Human Resources Service to initiate the necessary procedure to adopt the appropriate resolution for the award of the Police Merit Cross with Red Distinction to the members of the Local Police, José Miguel Díaz García and Francisco Martínez Medina, as evidenced by the Police Local Directorate’s letter dated April 15, 2025.

The police report of November 29, 2024, informs about «the serious fire that occurred on Padre Esplá street, in the basement of a building where a Kebab restaurant was located. As a result of the fire, the building’s staircase was completely filled with smoke, leaving a disabled woman and her companion stranded on the second-floor landing. Upon hearing their cries for help, the officers accessed the staircase despite poor visibility and high toxicity due to the smoke and evacuated these two individuals to the public street, saving their lives.»

As a result of the intervention, one of the officers required medical attention from a SAMU ambulance at the scene, with no need for transfer. The proposal highlights «the bravery and professionalism of these two officers,» and also refers to the individual commendation to each of the two intervening officers by the Chief Police Commissioner, «for risking their integrity, demonstrating quick reaction and professionalism in the performance of their duties.»

Unanimity regarding the CEIP La Cañada del Fenollar

The Council has unanimously approved an institutional declaration to urge the Infrastructure Directorate of the Department of Education to expedite the acceptance of a budget increase for the construction of the new school in La Cañada del Fenollar, and to review and update the school’s emergency and civil protection plan and its surroundings. The proposal made jointly by Compromís and Eu Podem has also been supported by the other political groups: PP, PSOE, and Vox.
The Councilor for Education, Mari Carmen de España, has ensured that «the commitment of this government team to the families is that the La Cañada del Fenollar project will come through, as we have done with the El Somni CEE,» while recalling that it was the PP who included these two centers in the Edificant Plan when «they were not a priority for the previous tripartite government.» The councilor has reiterated the start of the planned works in the rest of the schools such as Juan Bautista Llorca, Santo Ángel de la Guarda CEE, or the recent start of works at La Almadraba CEIP as «good news for education in Alicante under this municipal government.»
Impact of tariffs
The Council has approved, with the support of PP and Compromís, an Institutional Declaration urging the Spanish Government to conduct an in-depth analysis of how tariffs truly affect the profitability of products exported and imported to and from the United States. This analysis should include a real stress test of the costs of imported materials, manufacturing, transportation, and other related expenses, as a preliminary step to decision-making.
In the same declaration, the City Council requests the Government to promote with aids and economic measures and a favorable regulatory environment, the relocation of national companies and their production in Spanish territory, as well as unblocking the Agricultural Taxation Law and keeping affected companies informed promptly. Ultimately, the agreement advocates for the Government to take the necessary actions to mitigate the impact of tariffs on Spanish products.
The PSOE and EU-Podemos have voted against this declaration, while Vox has abstained.
Reducing youth unemployment
The City Council of Alicante has also addressed the issue of youth unemployment in an Institutional Declaration presented by the Popular Group, which has been approved with the abstention of Vox and the opposition of PSOE, Compromís, and EU-Podemos.
This document urges the Government to implement measures such as tax deductions for young people in their first job, which would significantly alleviate the tax burden and facilitate their job insertion. It also calls for policies that promote youth entrepreneurship and self-employment, especially in emerging sectors such as digital economy, environmental, or new creativity.
Likewise, it demands that the Executive generate new employment programs aimed at young people, involving companies in them, and defend the labor rights of all young people and provide greater protection for their labor rights. The Council thus calls on the central Government to implement the necessary actions to reduce the high rate of youth unemployment.
Additionally, the Council has unanimously agreed to initiate the necessary procedures for the creation of a properly equipped camper area in the municipal area after conducting a feasibility study to determine the most suitable location, technical characteristics, investment and maintenance costs, and possible sources of funding.
Other agreements
Furthermore, another institutional declaration has been approved to urge the Spanish Government to initiate legislative modifications to expand the mandatory registration to all personal mobility vehicles such as electric scooters, proposed by Vox and supported by the PP, while PSOE, Compromís, and EU Podem have voted against it.
The Council has also expressed support for the development of the suburban railway network, urging the Spanish Government to comply with the agreements of the Cercanías Plan of the Valencian Community (217-2025), developing the first phase of the Torrellano Variant for the connection to the Alicante-Elche ‘Miguel Hernández’ airport. The institutional declaration promoted by Compromís has been unanimously endorsed. Mayor Luis Barcala has emphasized the «close and loyal» collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Minister Óscar Puente to accelerate this infrastructure.
