Alicante, April 16, 2024. The City Council of Alicante reopens the doors of El Palmeral Park today, after completing the installation of technical flooring in the new children’s play and calisthenics areas that kept it closed for the last 10 days. With this action, the comprehensive renovation of one of the unique natural spaces in the province’s capital is completed in two phases, involving an investment of 1.3 million euros to update it and introduce new attractions for families, including six new children’s play and calisthenics areas, a Pum Track circuit, and the modernization of the pier.
As announced by the mayor, Luis Barcala, during a visit to the works on March 20, the park would reopen during Easter. Barcala was able to witness firsthand the major innovations added to El Palmeral, including six new play areas, four children’s play areas in small and large formats, and two calisthenics areas to improve physical fitness, as well as the creation of five picnic areas and pergolas to enhance the livability of one of the city’s unique and emblematic parks.
The City Council of Alicante awarded the second phase of these works to the company Imesapi S.A. in October of last year, for 981,989 euros. The goals set with the inclusion of these six large children’s play and calisthenics areas were to give the park a greater family-friendly and healthy appeal. This action, along with the first phase, which cost 362,153 euros, brings the total investment to over 1.3 million euros, ensuring the modernization of an environmental facility that is a reference in the city. Opened in 1997, El Palmeral de Alicante is frequented by families and numerous tourists who enjoy this privileged environment with over seven thousand palm trees, lakes, and recreational spaces overlooking the sea.
The comprehensive renovation of the facilities also allowed for improvements in the premises, addressing roads, lakes, furniture, services, access points, perimeter fencing, sidewalks, the installation of new signage, and the planting of palm trees, trees, plants, and shrubs, following the project developed by the municipal technicians of ‘Brota Alicante’.
One of the enhancements made includes the entrance to the park with the planting of palm trees, trees, and shrubs in the flower beds, the adaptation of the sidewalk, and the installation of waiting benches. The final roundabout at the front promenade has also been renovated to facilitate bus turns.
This recently completed second stage complements the first phase of park renovation carried out at the beginning of 2023 by the company Ingeniería del Riego y Paisaje S.L., which involved an investment of 362,153 euros and included the renovation of the Pum Track circuit, the pier, pathways, bridges, and pergolas for the enjoyment of visitors.
The Project
The new inclusive children’s play and calisthenics areas, all adapted to current regulations, include combined games, trampolines, swings, rotating games, musical games, interactive educational games, and sports circuits. The aim of this action is to strengthen the family-friendly character of the park, characterized by its landscaping and its location facing the sea.
Informational signs with the game usage conditions have been placed in the play areas, in addition to the complete renovation of the park’s interior signage. New benches with tables for picnics and resting, along with pergolas, have been installed next to the Pum Track circuit and the new play areas to make parents’ stay more comfortable while children play.
Technical and Safety Improvements
In the technical and safety section, the dismantling of the existing metal fencing in the elevated entrance area of the park was carried out, as well as the renovation of the existing metal handrail in the center of the access stairs and the metal railing in the lake area. Pavement improvements and adaptation of pedestrian and leisure paths have also been made, with the renewal of podotactile pavements and the creation of tree pits where more trees have been planted to generate new shaded spaces.
The technical flooring in the children’s play areas is continuous and colored with an elastic safety consistency of rubber with variable thickness depending on the area. At the western end of the park, the existing sidewalk has been paved to continue the pedestrian route. In terms of gardening, the installation of a drip irrigation network for trees in tree pits and alignments has been completed.
To ensure the movement of large water masses in the canals and lakes, a series of actions have been taken in treatments for carbonation and chlorides protection for concrete and mortar elements, the enlargement of the equipment collection and chlorination booth with the construction of an additional room adjacent to the existing one.
