The Local Government Board has approved the acquisition of six properties owned by SAREB for the improvement of housing under the public housing stock increase program funded by the State Plan for Access to Housing 2022-2025, the so-called ADHA Plan.
The Councilor for Social Action, Celia Lastra, indicated that in February 2024, the Local Government Board agreed to request a grant for the acquisition of these 6 properties owned by SAREB in response to the expressed need from the council to acquire these properties to increase the public housing stock and allocate them for rent or lease with a determined maximum rental or lease price, especially for vulnerable groups.
The grant of 342,500 euros has enabled the acquisition of these 6 properties in different parts of the municipality. «This acquisition represents an expansion of the public housing stock in Elche, and most importantly, we will have a greater number of housing alternatives available for social rent and/or lease for emergency housing,» Lastra stated, noting that these properties are intended to assist families facing housing exclusion who cannot afford market-rate rent due to their income.
Furthermore, the free transfer of the palm grove named ‘Hort de Malena’ located in the heart of the city, surrounded by municipal-owned orchards, across from the Tower, on the way to the Mills, has been accepted.
According to spokesperson Inma Mora, «it is the intention of this City Council to recover and enhance the traditional housing and structures of the palm grove ‘Hort de Malena’ for the study, understanding, and dissemination of the historical and cultural values they represent, the palm grove itself, and its hydraulic infrastructure.» The agreement is set for a period of 10 years.
Additionally, the execution project for the Maestro José Toro social center in Torrellano, located between Libertad, Alcudia, Astronauts, and Violeta streets, has been approved. This project involves the construction of a new space of 1,900 square meters that will serve over 7,000 citizens from the districts of Torrellano, Santa Ana, Balsares, Saladas, and Jubalcoy.
The new socio-cultural center will have two floors, with a large auditorium on the first floor accommodating 466 people, 350 on the ground floor, and 166 in the amphitheater.
