The Alzheimer Spain Foundation (FAE) has scheduled the event ‘An Afternoon to Remember’ at the Teatro Principal in Alicante on Saturday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m., to raise awareness about the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, through a session of the play ‘Those Bread Crumbs’ and a discussion with experts from this organization and the artistic team.
The proposal was presented this Tuesday, at an event attended by the theater’s deputy director, María Dolores Padilla; the FAE’s second vice president, Nohemí Martínez; the actress, producer, and translator of the text, Carmen Ibeas; the producer Niko Verona and the actress Mónica Bardem, as reported by the organization in a statement.
The event will feature the play ‘Those Bread Crumbs’, an adaptation of ‘Breadcrumbs’ by American author Jennifer Haley, which will be performed by Bardem and Ibeas under the direction of actress Inma Cuevas.
Following the performance, there will be a discussion with the audience, featuring the artistic team of the play, as well as experts in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, who will discuss Alzheimer’s from a clinical perspective. Tickets can be purchased on the Teatro Principal website with prices starting at ten euros.
This cultural awareness event, sponsored by the artist and ambassador of FAE, José Mota, aims to «support and raise awareness» about the process that Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers go through from the moment of diagnosis.
The play, produced by Varsovia Producciones – founded by Ibeas and actor Niko Verona – and Kendosan Producciones, debuted «successfully» at the Teatro Infanta Isabel in Madrid in May 2023 and had a special performance at the Teatro Fígaro in the capital on September 19 of the same year, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day.
The event comes to Alicante after its run in Madrid, where awareness sessions on this disease, titled ‘A Few Days to Remember’, were held in September at the Teatro Amaya, and continued to other cities such as Zaragoza, Aranda de Duero, Ciudad Rodrigo, Valladolid, Burgos, and Valdepeñas. New cities on the tour will be announced soon.
«DEBUNKING MYTHS»
The play aims to debunk the myth that Alzheimer’s only affects older people and reflects on the emotions of the patient, such as the fear of being forgotten, total dependence on the caregiver, and social exclusion. This perspective emphasizes «the importance of early diagnosis», in line with FAE’s motto for 2024-2025: ‘The earlier the diagnosis, the better for our group’.
In this regard, FAE’s president, Micheline Antoine Selmes, has invited the population to «actively participate» in this event, «designed to raise awareness and promote prevention with healthy brain habits, break taboos, and encourage early detection.»
In this vein, the organization appreciates that works like ‘Those Bread Crumbs’ have a place in culture, «showing the reality of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers»: «We must dispel the idea that memory loss is normal among older people. At any sign, it is crucial to consult a doctor for an early diagnosis and start therapies to slow down the progression of the disease.»
