Alicante, April 25, 2025. The Alicante City Council held the second workshop of the preliminary consultation process for the General Structural Plan (GSP) ‘Alicante, a plan with you’ this Thursday at the Casa de la Misericordia, attended by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Rocío Gómez, and the General Director of Planning, Leticia Martín. In this meeting, the strategic lines in terms of urban growth and development that are planned to be incorporated into the planning document were addressed, citizens’ queries were resolved, and their proposals were collected in two working groups on Creating large nodes that enhance economic activity and Designing new residential growth sectors with sustainability criteria and public housing policy.
«The Alicante that we are designing together in the General Structural Plan aims for compact and sustainable urban development, with residential growth spaces that will accommodate 32,700 homes and will be located around the consolidated city, with a strong commitment to public protection housing,» explained Councilor for Urban Planning, Rocío Gómez.
«Improving and expanding industrial estates and developing new nodes of productive activity are some of the main proposals in terms of economic promotion,» added Gómez, who thanked the people of Alicante for their involvement in this preliminary consultation process: «Your participation is crucial, thank you for making the effort and dedicating your time to collaborate with the City Council in building an Alicante for everyone and for everyone,» she emphasized.
Second workshop
The workshop ‘Urban Growth and Development’ is the second participatory meeting organized by the City Council within the framework of the public consultation of the GSP. The first, held on April 10, focused on Green Infrastructure and Mobility, and the third, on Services and Urban Regeneration, is scheduled to take place on May 8.
This second workshop began with a presentation of the public consultation process and the processing of the GSP, urging attendees to visit the website alicanteunplancontigo.es, where all the information is available, and to complete the survey, which is available until May 15.
Subsequently, the main objectives, strategic lines, and planned actions in terms of urban growth and development were addressed, and participants were able to fill out forms with contributions and suggestions, which they presented and discussed later in two working groups on Creating large nodes that enhance economic activity and Designing new residential growth sectors with sustainability criteria and public housing policy.
To conclude, the main contributions and conclusions of each working group were shared, which will be published on the consultation website and included in the draft of the GSP.
Objectives
The thematic axis ‘Urban Growth and Development’ of the GSP focuses on new urban proposals for residential and productive growth of the city, such as future urban developments, large urban transformation operations, productive areas, strategic activities, and innovation.
The objectives pursued are:
– Promote compact and sustainable urban development: Ensure efficient growth around the consolidated city that optimizes the use of space and resources.
– Transform decentralized industrial lands: Identify consolidated industrial lands that are incompatible with the new model due to their location and integration with the consolidated city by incorporating mixed residential uses.
– Update industrial estates: Improve their conditions and connections to attract innovative activities and diversify the local economy.
– Promote new economic spaces: Provide new productive spaces with flexible regulations that allow their conversion according to market needs, promoting mixed uses where work and housing coexist.
Strategic lines and actions
In this sense, two strategic lines have been proposed, with different action proposals, on which the people of Alicante have been able to raise their queries and proposals in this workshop and on which the public consultation survey, located on the website alicanteunplancontigo.es, also asks.
These strategic lines and actions are as follows:
– Line 1. Creation of large nodes that enhance economic activity
› Expansion of productive activity estates.
› Improvement of urban quality and facilities in existing industrial estates.
› Creation of an innovation and sports hub in the vicinity of the University of Alicante.
› Development of a business and innovation hub in South Alicante (City of Light-Airport).
› Promotion of a thematic cluster of health and wellness around Denia Avenue.
– Line 2. Design of new residential growth sectors with sustainability criteria and public housing policy
› Future residential developments in a perimeter arc.
› Creation of new spaces for protected housing.
› Conversion of industrial fabrics.
Proposals on green infrastructure and mobility
On the other hand, the Councilor for Urban Planning has reported that the minutes of the first participatory workshop on green infrastructure and mobility are now available on the consultation website, alicanteunplancontigo.es, which includes issues raised by citizens.
In terms of green infrastructure, proposals aimed at achieving a linear coastal promenade without obstacles and the removal of private traffic from this area stand out, as well as the renaturalization of different spaces and the creation of new urban parks.
Regarding mobility, most citizen proposals advocate for the removal of railway barriers and the promotion of public transport with new TRAM and bus lines, as well as the creation of accessible and pedestrian itineraries.
A third workshop on Services and Urban Regeneration is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Casa de la Misericordia, and the survey will be available on the consultation website until May 15.
