Alicante, April 14, 2025. The Local Government Board plans to approve this Tuesday the project for works in the moat of Albacar d´Enmig at Santa Bárbara Castle for 143,672 euros and with a five-month execution period.
The works include the restoration of the surfaces in the main canvas, the affected lower parts of the Tower of Santa Caterina, the Tower of Coloma, and the Poterna, including its interior staircase and the bridge over the moat that provides access to the ensemble. All of this covers an area of action of about 600 square meters.
The project is led by the Department of Infrastructure, in coordination with the Department of Culture, which already has the technical project prepared by architect Jaime Giner and has the approval of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Conselleria de Cultura, which is necessary as it is a Cultural Interest Property (BIC).
Specifically, the objective of these works is the cleaning and consolidation of the wall surfaces, the restoration of the different elements that characterize the intervention area such as ashlar, rubble, and rammed earth, the recovery of access to spaces restricted to the public, and even the recovery of the use of the upper floor of the Tower of Santa Caterina. And also the repair of the sanitation network in the intervention area.
The Councilor for Infrastructure, Cristina García, has stated that «this is a necessary action that falls within the improvements we are and will continue to make at Santa Bárbara Castle for its conservation so that we can continue to enjoy our main heritage and tourist bastion.»
Local Government Board
On the other hand, the Local Government Board will move from the Town Hall to the Provincial Archaeological Museum MARQ this Tuesday. The meeting, in which the aforementioned restoration project of the Castle moat will be approved among others, will be held exceptionally this Tuesday at the museum in light of the exhibition «Cities of Light. Ákra Leuké, Lucentum, Laqant» on the origin of Alicante.
The municipal government has decided to convene the Local Government Board at MARQ as a tribute to the city’s history. This exhibition takes a journey through the ancient cities that developed in the surroundings of the Tossal de Manises site that gave rise to Alicante. This temporary exhibition can be visited until next September, following MARQ’s decision to extend it.
